Hazards and how we can help

The intentional capture of birds. In some artisanal fishing fleets the birds are caught accidently. In other cases, some fishermen catch it to use it as food.

Marine pollution. The oil from fishing boats, plastics (bags, bottles, wrappers, etc.) and food containers (Styrofoam) are thrown into the water. The seabirds can take them as food and dying or poisoning.

How can you help the albatrosses?

If you are a fisher:

  • Put the baited hooks at night
  • Put weights on hooks
  • If a bird lands on your baited hook and still is alive remove the hook (if possible) and let it on the deck until it has recovered and liberated.
  • If you see seabirds close to your boat avoid disturbing them
  • Remember, the rings on the legs birds have no reward. There is no money given for the rings.

If you are a vacationer:

  • If you visit the beaches this summer, collect all your waste.
  • Remember plastics, tecknopor and other waste can be taken as food by birds, turtles and marine mammals and causing choking and affect their health on a long-term.
